China’s economic planning agency has approved a US$1.64 billion (Yuan 12.7 billion) expansion plan for Chengdu Shuang-Liu International airport in SiChuan province.
The expansion project will include a new terminal and a second runway and is due to be completed by the year 2010. Chengdu Shuang-Liu will become the fourth international airport in China to feature a second runway after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The new 250000m² terminal and 250,000m² car park will increase capacity at the airport to 38 million passengers and 800,000 tonnes of cargo a year. Last year, the airport – China’s fifth busiest – handled 16.28 million passengers.
At 3,600m long and 60m wide, the new runway will be able to handle planes as large as the new Airbus A380.
