Lyon Airport unveils renovated Terminal 3

Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport has unveiled its new €24.4 million (£19.5 million) Terminal 3 that was designed in consultation with low cost carrier Easy Jet and increases airport's low cost passenger capacity to three million a year.

The main 4,000m2 building features 12 check-in desks, eight baggage screening stations and a new shopping area offering food and beverage outlets as well as duty free stores.

Check-in for the new Terminal 3 currently takes place in the old terminal building and is connected to a 5,000m2 satellite terminal via an underground gallery. The satellite terminal features 10 gates for medium aircraft and pre-boarding rooms that allow for a 20-minute turnaround.

The terminal is part of a larger €260 million (£208 million) project at the airport that will see the extension of both Terminals 1 and 3 by 2016. Once completed, Terminal 3 will be directly connected to a new shared 15,000m2 public area, where check-in, security, arrivals and baggage handling will be centralised.

The old Terminal 3, which opened for the Winter Olympic Games in 1992, will be demolished in 2016.

Philippe Bernand, CEO of Aéroports de Lyon, said at the official opening on the terminal on Thursday (28 June), “It is a new low cost carrier terminal, but it has not been built in the idea of the lowest possible cost. It has been built following very constructive, positive discussions with airlines.

The terminal is not low cost, but it is designed to accommodate low cost carriers.

We have analysed, with the airlines, what is critical for them in terms of ground operations. It is simple, but it is not cheap.”
