The Design Solution wins two Toronto contracts

The Design Solution has been awarded two contracts for work on the commercial planning of Terminals 1 and 3 and the duty and tax-free operations at Toronto Pearson Airport.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), which operates the Canadian airport, has appointed The Design Solution to work on the new plan for Terminal 3 that will channel all international and domestic traffic through one security zone, and channel transborder traffic (passengers travelling to the USA who pass through both immigration and customs clearance in Canada) through another.

"We were part of the Arup team that worked on these principles a year ago and are thrilled to have a new appointment to plan these new major commercial areas in detail," stated Robbie Gill, director responsible for the project. Both commercial zones in T1 and T3 will feature redesigned duty free shops, a mix of speciality retail and food and beverage with holding areas for common seating.

The company will also work with The Nuance Group (TNG) on its duty and tax-free operations. "It has been a great experience working with the TNG North America’s team, there are different dynamics between this market and the European model but the principles are the same: clarity, clear messages, great products displayed forcefully, confident circulation routes and most of all, a strong local flavour that gives the stores a firm grounding in their location," stated Gill.

Working for both GTAA and TNG adds a level of responsibility greater than in most situations, especially in Terminal 1. The majority of the international traffic departs from the end of the pier, which is dominated by a dramatic sculpture by Richard Serra. Adjacent to the sculpture are commercial areas operated by TNG and the challenge is to balance art, architecture, commerce and operations in one space.

This is the first time that The Design Solution has been appointed by both the airport and the major airport retailer independently on a major international airport project.
