HAS launches performing arts program for Houston airports

Airport operator Houston Airport System (HAS) has created a performing arts program to entertain passengers at George Bush Intercontinental and William P Hobby airports in Houston, Texas, USA.

The ‘Harmony in the Air’ program will feature a diverse repertoire of classical, contemporary classical, smooth jazz and international music performed by local artists. Each musician participating in the program already performs at various music venues throughout Houston.

Performances will take place in the atrium beyond the security checkpoint at William P Hobby Airport, and in the walkway that connects Terminal A North and Terminal A South at George Bush Intercontinental.

Mario Diaz, aviation director, city of Houston, said, “Houston has so much to offer in the way of culture. As we think about and explore ways to become a five-star global air service gateway, we wanted to find a way to enhance our passengers’ experience as they transition through our terminals, and this program allows us to do just that while actively supporting the arts in Houston and the region. It provides passengers an opportunity to relax and stop and experience something unexpected and very special.”

Annise Parker, mayor of Houston, said, “Arts and culture contribute to our quality of life and are an expression of the soul of a city. Houston prides itself on being the most diverse city in the nation. The arts are a vital part of our Houston fabric which advances our economy and shapes and defines our community.”

The following groups are currently participating in Harmony in the Air:
• Ars Lyrica – baroque string quartet and piano recitals;
• Bob Chadwick’s Jazz Trio – eclectic blend of international world music and jazz;
• Divisi Strings – avant-garde string quartet that mixes classical music with modern hits;
• Musiqa – modern string ensemble and classical saxophone quartet; and
• Solero Flamenco – flamenco performance company.
