Laos requires four additional international airports

Laos in Southeast Asia requires four new international airports in order to handle the growing number of passengers over the next two decades. That is according to the country’s minister of public works and transport, Dr Bounchanh Sinthavong.

Sinthavong presented a new strategic airport development plan during one of the country’s cabinet meetings, reported news site Asia News Network. Sinthavong claimed that despite the planned expansion works being carried out at Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Laos, the airport’s capacity would still be exceeded by 2028. After this point, the airport would have no more space for further expansion meaning that a new international airport would need to be built outside the city center.

“A new international airport must be built outside the city,” said Sinthavong. “Construction of the new airport is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed before 2030. It is expected that a new international airport will be in use by 2030.”

According to the report, Sinthavong explained it was a similar situation for the international airports in the Champassak, Savannakhet and Luang Prabang provinces.
