Xtralis smoke detectors selected for MTB at Abu Dhabi International

Airport operator Abu Dhabi Airports has contracted safety and security specialist Xtralis to install its VESDA VLS aspirating smoke detectors in the new Midfield Terminal Building (MTB) at Abu Dhabi International Airport in the UAE, scheduled to open in 2017.

Xtralis VESDA and VESDA-E aspirating smoke detectors (ASD) are used in several UAE super structures including the Burj Khalifa, Emirates Palace Hotel and Dubai International Airport.

One of the main challenges with smoke detection at the MTB is caused by the 7,500,000ft² of internal space where smoke can be diluted, an effect compounded by air-conditioning systems.

Additionally, temperatures in the terminal could range from hot to cold, depending on the weather. The VESDA system was selected based on its ability to ensure early and reliable detection under such conditions.
