Miami International announces record year for 2015

Miami International Airport in Florida, USA, recorded its busiest year ever in 2015 after serving more than 44 million passengers, an increase of 8% or three million travelers when compared with 2014. Domestic passengers surged by 12% to reach 23.1 million, while international traffic rose 6% and comprised 21.2 million travelers.

The surge in growth at the airport has been attributed to several new carriers and routes added in the Q4 2015, with Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines and low-cost carrier VivaColombia all joining the airport. There were also new A380 superjumbo services from British Airways and Air France and more frequent flights by international carriers airberlin, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, SWISS, Virgin Atlantic and WestJet.

Carlos A Gimenez, mayor of Miami-Dade County, said, “I cannot say enough about how pleased I am with the growth at the airport in 2015. In addition to being our county’s top economic engine and one of Florida’s most valued assets, Miami International Airport is fast-becoming one of the busiest airports in the nation and in the world.”

Emilio T González, aviation director for Miami-Dade County, said, “2015 was without question our most amazing year ever for passenger growth. In addition to growing by three million passengers in one year, the six new passenger airlines added in 2015 make a total of 12 in the last two years, or one new entrant carrier every other month. With the most airlines of any US airport, and the continued expansion of hub carrier American Airlines and other existing carriers, Miami International Airport is poised to reach greater heights in 2016.”
