Framework completed for Bristol Airport’s west terminal extension project

A topping out ceremony was held yesterday (January 27, 2016) to mark the completion of the steelwork for the £24m (US$35m) west terminal extension project at Bristol Airport in southwest England. To mark the occasion, guests from engineering firm Balfour Beatty joined Bristol Airport’s senior management team to view the extension’s highest point.

The west extension project is Bristol Airport’s biggest investment since the terminal opened in March 2000. The project will create several new passenger facilities including a new security and customs zone, an expanded baggage reclaim area and new retail offerings for arrivals. The 97,000ft² facility will be opened in three phases with the first phase set for completion in summer 2016. The entire project is due to be completed before the end of the year.

Robert Sinclair, CEO at Bristol Airport, said, “Feedback on the east terminal extension – which enhanced and extended the departure lounge when it opened last summer – has been very positive. On completion, the west terminal extension will address other key stages of the airport journey – security search – as well as enhancing the baggage reclaim and meeters and greeters space. By the end of next year, we will have transformed the passenger experience, providing another powerful reason for people across the South West [of the UK] and Wales to choose to fly from Bristol.”

Martyn Osborne, managing director, South West and Wales, Balfour Beatty, said, “Balfour Beatty is dedicated to delivering first-class projects and we are delighted to be working with Bristol Airport on the west terminal extension.

“This topping out ceremony marks a significant milestone in the development and provides an opportunity to showcase the progress of the terminal as well as recognize the hard work and collaboration of all of the teams involved.”
