Hamad International achieves ACI Level 1 carbon accreditation

Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, has achieved Level 1 carbon accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI) for its progress in mapping its carbon footprint.

There are four levels to ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program including mapping, reduction, optimization and neutrality. The accreditation is independently verified and applies to all facilities within the airport’s direct control including the terminal, car parks, perimeter roads, lighting, offices and waste water system.

The certificate was presented to Badr Mohammed Al Meer, chief operating officer for Hamad International Airport, at ACI’s 8th Annual Airport Economics & Finance Conference & Exhibition, which took place in London on March 8, 2016.

Al Meer said, “At Hamad Airport, we believe in our environmental responsibility and are committed to tackling climate change within the context of our strategy. It is in our best interest to develop a sustainable future for our airport by effectively managing the environmental impacts of our operations.

“Mapping our carbon footprint helps us optimize our energy demand management through new technology, continually improving operational practices and considering further investments in low carbon energy generation.”

Patti Chau, regional director of ACI Asia-Pacific, said, “I wish to congratulate Hamad International Airport on becoming Airport Carbon Accredited at the mapping level of the program. This is a strong demonstration of the airport’s commitment to go the extra mile in operating the airport in an environmentally sustainable manner, which is crucial for the long-term development of our industry.”
