International terminal opened at Yangon airport in Myanmar

Airport operator Yangon Aerodrome Company Limited (YACL), a subsidiary of Myanmar-based conglomerate Asia World Company (AWC), has officially opened the doors of its newly expanded Terminal 1 (T1) facility at Yangon International Airport in Mingaladon, south Myanmar.

The newly developed international terminal covers a total floor area of more than 1,000,000ft² and will boost the airport’s capacity from approximately six million passengers to more than 20 million travelers annually. The latest developments are the first phase of a three-stage masterplan that includes expanding T1 even further, and constructing a new VIP terminal and multi-story car park. The first phase of the expansion was completed over a period of 23 months.

U Htun Myint Naing, chairman of YACL and founder of AWC, said, “The opening of the new terminal is another significant milestone in the aviation history of Myanmar, which will open up plenty of opportunities. T1 will provide our passengers with international standards of service and quality experiences.”

T1 incorporates approximately 375,000ft² of retail outlets, dining options and commercial space and more than 30,000ft² of premium lounge space for passengers. The new terminal will also feature a Sky Mall shopping precinct for all members of the public, with a variety of restaurants and retail choices.

T1 was predominantly built using home-grown companies with up to 4,000 project managers, engineers and employees on-site at its peak, of which 80% were local. The opening of T1 will also create up to 600 new jobs.
