Japan loans Sri Lanka US$400m for expansion of Bandaranaike International

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a governmental department that coordinates official development assistance (ODA) or international aid for the government of Japan, has agreed to lend ¥45bn (US$400m) to the government of Sri Lanka for the development of Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.

The loan will be used to build a new terminal at the airport that will be capable of handling approximately 15 million passengers annually, more than doubling the capacity of the airport and helping to alleviate congestion. The new terminal will also utilize the latest environmental measures including LED lighting and water recycling facilities. The project is scheduled for completion by 2020.
