Terminal improvement works approved for Tucson International

The board of the Tucson Airport Authority (TAA) has approved a multi-phase terminal improvement project to expand Tucson International Airport in Arizona, USA.

The project will redevelop under-utilized space in the ticketing lobbies and passenger checkpoints to create an enlarged security area and commercial offering, including new retail stores, food and beverage outlets, a business center and children’s play areas.

Engineering firm Sundt Construction will lead the project with ground works beginning this June. The project has a scheduled completion date of November 2017. The majority of funding for the US$28m project will come from the FAA’s passenger facility charge program and the remainder from the TAA. No tax dollars will be used to fund the project.

Bonnie Allin, CEO and president, TAA, said, “This project provides us with the opportunity to enhance the customer experience through improved space utilization. The larger security checkpoint allows for newer security technology and better passenger flow. The improved concessions will provide a greater variety of food and retail opportunities. This is going to take our airport to another level of excellence, and we’re excited to begin construction.”
