Explosion at Shanghai Pudong International injures four

Four people were injured yesterday (June 12) after a man detonated a homemade explosive device in the Terminal 2 (T2) check-in area at Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China.

According to Shanghai Police, the man was carrying a beer bottle containing the explosive device in his backpack, which he then hurled in front of a check-in counter in Area C of T2.

The unidentified man then removed a dagger from the same backpack and slashed at his own throat in a suicide attempt. The suspect is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.

According to a report on the Shanghai Municipal Government’s website, the four injured passengers are thought to include a 53-year-old man from the Philippines, two Chinese passengers aged 67 and 64, and an unidentified man in his 30s. All four are thought to have sustained non-life threatening injuries from the blast.

Local news agencies have been broadcasting a CCTV video of the incident showing passengers running from the check-in area moments before a bright flash is seen and smoke engulfs the area.
