Mineta San José International to upgrade international arrivals facility

Mineta San José International Airport in California will begin preparations next week for the expansion and renovation of its International Arrivals facility.

The project will create approximately 5,600ft² of extra space in the 14-year-old building and will see the addition of a second baggage carousel and enclosed welcome area. The project will get underway next week and is scheduled for completion in spring 2017.

Sam Liccardo, Mayor of San José, said, “These upgrades will help provide an enhanced customer experience for the growing numbers of international passengers who are traveling to Silicon Valley through Mineta San José International Airport. Investing in our International Arrivals Building is an important step in offering a warm, welcoming place for people from all over the globe to connect with each other.”

Features of the US$8.2m project include adding an extra 2,700ft² of bag claim space and a second baggage carousel; extending the front of the building by 2,900ft² and enclosing it; installing comfortable seating, restrooms and a snack space in the new waiting area; and the introduction of Global Entry, a membership-based, trusted traveler service, in which passengers place their passports and fingertips on the kiosk scanner for verification, make a customs declaration, and receive expedited clearance through the customs process.

Kim Becker, director of aviation for Mineta San José International Airport, said, “Upgrading the International Arrivals Building is another example of our focus on continuous improvement to offer a world-class experience for our growing numbers of international travelers. Our high-tech improvements in the facility will offer a warm and inviting experience for both travelers and those welcoming them to Silicon Valley.”
