Helsinki Airport opens exhibit showcasing iconic air traffic control towers

Finavia, the operator of Helsinki Airport in Finland, has opened a new photo exhibition showcasing the world’s most impressive air traffic control towers.

American photographer Carolyn Russo created the exhibit by selecting some of the best images from her book Art of the Airport Tower, which contains photographs of 85 historic and contemporary air traffic control towers taken from more than 20 countries.

Russo said, “Often the first impression travelers have when they reach a new destination is the tower, and each tower tells a unique and important story about its airport, community and culture. Collectively these towers represent many countries and cultures. They play a pivotal role in the vast network of air traffic control technology that brings people of the world closer together.”

The exhibition consists of eight photographs of air traffic control towers, with Helsinki and Oulu Airports representing Finland.

Carolyn Russo’s photographs have been widely exhibited at both solo and group exhibitions in the USA, Finland and China. Russo has worked as a staff photographer at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC since 1988 and acts as a specialist in the Aeronautics Division of the art collection.
