Terminal construction work begins at Acapulco International

Airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, also known as OMA, began construction work yesterday (July 13) on the new passenger terminal for Acapulco International Airport in Mexico.

The new terminal will cover more than 200,000ft² and will be delivered at a cost of approximately US$30m spread across a 20-month period. When complete the facility will boast six boarding gates, three passenger jetways, a state-of-the-art security screening area and new check-in facilities including 34 fixed and nine automated check-in kiosks. The building will cover three levels as well as a mezzanine, and will have the capacity to serve 1.3 million passengers annually.

The airport will continue to operate normally through the terminal construction phase, which is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2018.

Speaking at the time of the groundbreaking ceremony, Diego Quintana, chairman of the board, OMA, said, “Today is a very important day for Acapulco International Airport, marking the generational change in the terminal building. The terminal will be completely transformed through intelligent engineering, which will enable us to provide greater comfort and safety for passengers, visitors, airlines, and other service providers.”

Porfirio González, CEO, OMA, said, “OMA is committed to improving the connectivity of this important tourist destination. We will continue to work closely with the government of Guerrero, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation, and the Ministry of Tourism in the construction of the new airport.”
