Parsons-Odebrecht awarded BHS contract for Miami Airport

Airport operator Miami-Dade County has awarded construction firm Parsons-Odebrecht Joint Venture a contract to improve the baggage-handling systems at Miami International Airport in Florida.

The project will replace the in-line security screening portion of the South Terminal baggage-handling system (BHS) and will install an automated sortation system for the Central Terminal BHS, including outbound baggage conveyance systems, electrical modifications and power distribution systems, mechanical modifications, a 60,000ft² addition to the existing terminal building and a post-security corridor connecting Terminals G and H.

The contract for pre-construction services is US$7.5m, with a maximum construction budget of US$177m. The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is supporting the project with a grant to Miami-Dade County of US$101m.

The Miami-Dade Aviation Department, which manages the airport, has set a goal of attaining Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for the project. Local small business and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) participation in the project is estimated to be more than US$25m, with some 600 local direct and indirect jobs to be created. Upon completion, the project will significantly improve Miami Airport’s security and operating efficiency.

Collaborating for more than 15 years, the Parsons–Odebrecht Joint Venture has delivered several construction projects for Miami International, including the South Terminal expansion, the complete reconstruction of the North Terminal, and construction of the guideway and stations for the airport’s people mover.
