Hitachi trials customer service robot at Haneda Airport

Electronics manufacturer Hitachi has begun trialing a humanoid customer service robot in Terminal 2 (T2) at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan.

The EMIEW3 will greet airport users at a dedicated guidance counter, responding in both Japanese and English. When users ask a question, it will offer guidance by providing a variety of information and using media, such as maps and images, displayed on a screen next to the guidance counter. The tests will run from early September through until December 2016.

Hitachi originally developed the EMIEW robot in 2005 and after numerous modifications the manufacturer released the latest version in April 2016. The tests at Haneda will help Hitachi assess EMIEW3’s multi-language dialog and autonomous running functions.
