Hand luggage scanners being trialled at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

The National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism in the Netherlands has partnered with airline operator KLM to test two new scanning devices for hand luggage at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The software in the scanning devices makes it possible to rotate the contents of hand luggage 360º on all axes, enabling security staff to carefully search for prohibited items.

The pilot project will take place in two security lanes and will enable passengers to leave their liquids and laptop in their bag. Liquids and gels will still need to be placed in a clear plastic bag with a maximum total volume of one liter, and none of the containers in the bag exceeding 100ml. Passengers will receive separate instructions on what to expect in the lanes where the pilot is being conducted.

If everything goes to plan, Schiphol could gradually introduce the new hand luggage scanning devices in all 67 security lanes by late 2017.
