Scandic to open hotel at Helsinki Airport

Scandic, one of the largest hotel chains in the Nordics, has revealed its plans to open a new hotel at Helsinki Airport, Finland, in early 2018. The hotel will be opened approximately 100m (328ft) from Terminal 2 (T2).

The construction of Scandic Helsinki Airport will begin in 2017 and will be owned by Finavia’s subsidiary LAK Real Estate. Once complete, the hotel will boast 148 rooms and five conference rooms, as well as a bar, restaurant, gym and sauna.

Finavia is currently undertaking expansion works on the south and west wings of the terminal, which when completed in 2020, will expand the airport’s capacity to more than 20 million passengers.

Ville Haapasaari, Helsinki Airport director at Finavia, said, “Currently, there are three hotels in the airport area. The increase in room capacity will improve the service level of the airport and supports stop-over tourism in Finland. We warmly welcome Scandic to Helsinki Airport.

“Helsinki is Europe’s leading transfer airport for air traffic between Asia and Europe. This offers huge potential for tourism in Finland.

“The ground rule is that one million new passengers create 1,000 new jobs in air traffic. By 2020, our development program is expected to create roughly 5,000 new permanent jobs.”

Aki Käyhkö, managing director of Scandic Hotels, said, “Scandic Helsinki Airport is a valuable addition to our portfolio. It strengthens our position as the largest hotel chain in the Nordic countries. The property has a unique location, being only a stone’s throw away from the terminal.”
