Vancouver expands border control solution in line with new CBSA program

vancouver airport borderxpress PIK CBSA passenger terminal worldVancouver International Airport (YVR) has expanded its self-serve border control solution to meet the requirements of Canada Border Service Agency’s (CBSA) new Primary Inspection Kiosk (PIK).

YVR will introduce 90 new PIK configured BorderXpress kiosks this spring as part of CBSA’s objective to modernize the border entry process for travelers.

Passengers will scan their travel documents, complete their declaration, verify their identity and use facial recognition technology before seeing a CBSA officer for final inspection. This process will reduce time spent with CBSA officers and decrease overall processing time.

The paper declaration card will also be scrapped as the BorderXpress PIK technology will handle its function. Passengers can save further time by completing their declaration on the eDeclaration (Beta) mobile app and scan their QR code at a kiosk upon arrival.

Craig Richmond, president and CEO at Vancouver Airport Authority, said, “Border clearance kiosks are the way of the future and we applaud the CBSA’s continued efforts to expand the use of kiosks to reduce border wait times while meeting evolving security needs.

“Not only do our BorderXpress solutions provide a modern and efficient experience for our passengers, they are also a smart choice for airports and government, as they help to reduce overall operating costs and free up border officers to focus more closely on enforcement and intelligence efforts.”

It is hoped the new kiosks will help YVR meet its goal of handling 25 million passengers by 2025.
