Pittsburgh International Airport celebrated Earth Day with a number of sustainable initiatives, community partnerships and events.

In response to passenger feedback, five new electric vehicle charging points have been installed in the long-term parking lot, bringing the total number of station to 11. There are also six charging points in the short-term parking lot.

Volunteer airport ambassadors staffed an information table and prize wheel for passengers to win green giveaways such as water bottles, windflower seeds and pencils. Airport Authority employees also assisted the Montour Trail Council to clean up litter, repair planter boxes and cut grass at the trail near mile marker 0.

Kevin Gurchak, vice president of sustainability and natural resources, took California University of Pennsylvania students on a field trip around the airport property to learn about natural and constructed wetlands and airport-implemented water quality improvement techniques.

Pittsburgh Airport has continued to advance its year-round initiatives aimed at conservation and sustainability. Examples include the Airport Authority providing space for beehives and beekeepers near its fire training facility and working with them to relocate honeybee swarms for the airfield; numerous indoor and outdoor lighting upgrades that reduce electricity consumption; terminals designed to maximize natural lighting; and collecting and recycling spent airport deicing fluid in winter.
