Malta Airport opens renovated observation deck

Malta International Airport has opened its newly renovated observation deck, complete with custom-designed canopies and installations depicting the history of the airport.

The facelift is part of the first phase of the airport’s €12m (US$13.4m) reconfiguration project, which kicked off in September 2016 and is expected to be complete by summer 2018.

Located on the third level of the terminal, the observation deck provides passengers and aviation enthusiasts with panoramic views of the airfield and the surrounding area. Its corridor has been decorated in bright colors to appeal to younger generations and its new canopies have been designed to produce shade similar to that provided by foliage and tree branches. The observation deck is open on a 24/7 basis and is free to access.

Alan Borg, CEO, Malta Airport, said, “We sincerely hope that the spruced-up space will live up to the public’s expectations and contribute to the enhanced experience we always strive to give, not only to our traveling guests but also to the airport’s visitors.”

The airport is also due to complete the installation a new Central Security Screening Area this week. The entire security area had been located on the ground floor of the terminal building and has now been relocated to the first floor, where it will occupy a much bigger footprint. The switchover is scheduled to take place on June 28 and will feature new screening technology, boarding pass readers and tray return systems.

Patrick Murgo, head of security, Malta Airport, said, “The new Central Screening Area will be a big step forward for the terminal. Making such a move in a fully operational airport is a major undertaking and we will be doing everything possible to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.”
