TSA raises security baseline for US domestic flights

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has begun implementing new, stronger screening procedures for carry-on items on US domestic flights.

The new procedures, which were announced earlier this year and which have a strong focus on electronic threats, require travelers to place all electronics larger than a cell phone in bins for x-ray screening. TSA officers will ask passengers to place these items in a bin with nothing on top or below it, similar to how laptops are screened. Passengers will experience a bag check if they fail to follow this procedure.

Jerry Henderson, TSA federal security director, commented, “TSA has enhanced its security procedures to stay ahead of evolving threats. TSA is committed to raising the baseline for aviation security and we appreciate the cooperation of the traveling public in this endeavor.

“The simple step of separating personal electronic items for screening allows TSA officers to more closely focus on resolving alarms and stopping terror threats.”

The new procedures are being rolled out at airports across the USA, including Orlando International Airport (MCO). These measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in the TSA Pre program.
