Poczta Polska has won a tender to provide passenger and baggage security screening at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, one of Poland’s largest regional airports. The three-year contract took effect on August 1.

Under the agreement, Poczta Polska will continue operating the airport’s security screening checkpoints, a role it already held prior to the renewed tender. Around 70 employees are involved in the operation of the security checkpoints, with the number of screening operators on a single shift ranging from several to more than a dozen depending on seasonal passenger traffic.

Assa Abloy has signed an agreement to acquire Gunnebo Entrance Control, a provider of entrance control systems, including passenger e-gates and security doors. Its systems have been provided to multiple airports such as Sofia and Madrid-Barajas and with airport operators including Swedavia.

In June, Gunnebo Entrance Control launched HiSec Nova, a new security portal introducing three new technologies covering occupancy detection, drive control and system intelligence.

Gunnebo Entrance Control has around 670 employees.

Tampa International Airport has announced that Clear identity systems are expected to launch at its security screening checkpoints this autumn.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority Board approved a contract on August 6 to bring Clear+ lanes and automated e-gates to each of Tampa’s four airside terminals for the first time.

Clear+ members will be able to enter dedicated Clear+ lanes and move through an e-gate that verifies identity by matching a traveler’s face to their ID and boarding pass, before they move directly to physical screening.

The African Airlines Association (AFRAA), the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have urged African states to implement advance passenger information (API) and passenger name record (PNR) systems in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and global best practices.

API and PNR systems provide governments with passenger information ahead of travel, helping to strengthen border security, support law enforcement efforts and facilitate the movement of legitimate travelers.

Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East (ACI APAC & MID) has underscored critical challenges and security threats facing airports at an ICAO regional forum attended by more than 70 aviation security experts.

ACI APAC & MID spoke at the 14th ICAO Asia & Pacific Regional Aviation Security Coordination Forum (RASCF-APAC/14), held in Negombo, Sri Lanka on 25–26 June where it detailed emerging security threats to aviation, difficulties in implementing advanced technology at smaller airports, challenges in recruiting and training security screeners and constraints arising from airport design limitations that can hinder effective security protection.

Ontario International Airport is updating its security screening experience with the opening of an expanded passenger checkpoint in Terminal 2, with similar enhancements scheduled to open soon in Terminal 4.

Since returning to local ownership in November 2016, Ontario International Airport has grown from approximately 4.3 million annual passengers to more than seven million, making it one of the fastest-growing commercial airports in the USA. The checkpoint expansion was designed to ensure the airport can continue meeting that demand while maintaining passenger convenience.

Thai Aviation Industries, Edgewater Solutions and Amadeus have signed a memorandum of understanding stating the parties’ intention to collaborate on a roadmap for the modernization of the passenger journey and day-to-day airport operations across six of Thailand’s international and regional airports.

The companies will look at how seamless travel, biometrics, airport operations and data capabilities could work together across the passenger journey and the operations behind it to help airport stakeholders coordinate operations more effectively and improve passenger flow across key touchpoints.

Halo X-ray Technologies has completed a funding round to develop its x-ray diffraction (XRD) technology.

The round was led by Agilent Technologies, with both UKI2S and MEIF adding to their previous investments.

Halo’s XRD technology is designed to help security operators make faster and more informed screening decisions by providing a more precise understanding of the materials being screened.

XRD can work alongside primary screening x-ray or within an open architecture networked environment.

Cologne Bonn Airport has opened a modernized security checkpoint with 11 security lanes equipped with computed tomography technology.

The addition of the CT scanners means that travelers do not need to remove electronic devices and liquids from their carry-on luggage. The limit for carrying liquids has also been raised to two liters per container.

A private security service provider is responsible for conducting the security screenings. Following Frankfurt and Berlin, Cologne Bonn is the third airport in Germany to organize its own security screening processes.

A new report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) says the Transportation Security Administration‘s (TSA) cybersecurity goals and objectives are out of date.

TSA set out its aims to prioritize cybersecurity within the agency and in the transportation systems sector in its 2018 Cybersecurity Roadmap, which is now eight years old in a fast-changing threat environment.

GAO notes that as well as being outdated, the roadmap is no longer aligned with the latest Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity Strategy.
