Passenger traffic at Heathrow Airport declined in April 2026, reflecting disruption linked to the Middle East conflict, although underlying demand remained strong.

The airport handled 6.7 million passengers during the month, a 5.3% decrease year-on-year. Heathrow said the drop was driven by the ongoing impact of the conflict on certain markets, and short-term changes to travel plans.

Traffic to the Middle East saw the sharpest decline, down 52.4% year-on-year, while other regions showed more resilience.

Keflavík International Airport has introduced a new series of guided tours aimed at giving departing passengers a final experience of Icelandic culture before they leave the country.

The initiative, called The Bless Programme – named after the Icelandic word for “goodbye” – offers free 30–45-minute tours within the airport. The program is designed to provide short cultural experiences for travelers who may not have had time to fully explore Iceland during their visit.

Düsseldorf Airport has introduced a range of new food, beverage and retail concepts as part of a redevelopment project in partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail.

The new outlets officially opened on May 4, after Lagardère secured a master concession covering large parts of the airport’s retail and catering space. The rollout marks a milestone in the airport’s plan to expand its commercial offering.

Lars Redeligx, chairman of the management board of Flughafen Düsseldorf, said, “The new restaurants and shops send a strong signal: Düsseldorf Airport is moving another step closer to its goal of becoming one of Europe’s best airports.

Veovo has reached an agreement to acquire Dubai Technology Partners (DTP), an airport technology and services provider with roots across the Middle East. The acquisition is intended to strengthen Veovo’s presence in the region and bring new operational and AI capabilities into its Intelligent Airport Platform.

DTP has a team of 60 airport specialists with experience in busy and complex airports, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other hubs across Saudi Arabia.

Menzies Aviation has reopened its Pearl Lounge at Copenhagen Airport following a three-month refurbishment, part of a wider global lounge upgrade program.

The refurbishment is part of Menzies’ multi-year Pearl Lounge transformation initiative, aimed at standardizing and improving its premium lounge offering worldwide while incorporating local design elements. The company said the program is intended to enhance passenger experience and support growth in the premium hospitality segment.

At Copenhagen Airport, Menzies invested €2.7m (US$3.2m) to upgrade the facility, which reopened to passengers on May 1, 2026.

An independent evaluation conducted by Oliver Wyman found that the impact on passengers and staff was exacerbated by a combination of severe weather, operational challenges and the timing of mitigation measures. The disruption led to significant delays and cancellations, with passengers experiencing extended waiting times before continuing their journeys.

Long Beach Airport has broken ground on a US$37m project to modernize its passenger concourse, upgrade infrastructure and enhance the post-security experience ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Passenger Concourse Enhancement Project will include improvements to passenger circulation, such as updated queuing and seating layouts, alongside mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades. Plans also call for upgraded seating with charging options, new flooring and gate podiums, enhanced wayfinding signage and flight information displays, and the addition of a service animal relief area.

Sun Group has begun construction on the civil aviation component of Phan Thiet Airport in Vietnam, a project valued at more than VND3.9 trillion (US$148m).

The groundbreaking ceremony, held on April 27, 2026, was organized by the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee and Sun Group Corporation. The development will improve air connectivity to the Mui Ne-Phan Thiet area and the South Central Coast.

The airport, located in Mui Ne ward and covering nearly 75 hectares, is being developed to 4E standards, allowing it to handle wide-body aircraft, with an initial capacity of around 2 million passengers per year.

Amadeus has announced its intention to acquire Idemia Public Security (IPS) for €1.2bn (US$1.3bn), in a move aimed at expanding its biometric and identity capabilities across the travel sector.

The proposed acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals and expected to close in mid-2027, follows Amadeus’s 2024 purchase of Vision-Box and is intended to strengthen its position in airport and border technology.

IPS, headquartered in France, provides biometric and identity services to more than 600 public- and private-sector customers, and employs around 3,300 people globally.
