All of the airport’s activities are based on international sustainability standards, and zero waste is seen as a critical success factor.

Key to the airport’s certification was the sorting of waste, according to Ülkü Özeren, advisor to the chief executive officer and leader of the project. Istanbul sorts waste into five categories: paper/cardboard, packaging, glass, organic and domestic.

So much so, according to SFO’s healthy and resilient buildings program manager, Anthony Bernheim, that the scheme’s requirements were met by the new Harvey Milk Terminal 1 without the need to even tweak the building’s design.

Bernheim is responsible for the management of the Net Zero Energy and the Activation Planning Services programs within the airport’s planning design and construction function.

According to general manager operations, Anna Cassels-Brown, the Operations Centre is typically staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by up to 16 people in a shift team, handling the everyday functions in both the international and domestic terminals.

“Our Operations Centre normally runs as one large, open space – banks of monitors keep staff up to date with everything going on from the traffic on the roads, to the gate areas and arrivals hall.

Schiphol had already closed its pre-security smoking areas. Both closures were driven by a September 2019 ruling of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands that all smoking areas in Dutch catering outlets must be closed. Having complied with this by banning smoking from its F&B outlets, the airport chose to go one step further, making its terminal completely smoke-free.

Passenger flights at the Californian airport will be reduced by one-third, from 66 daily departures to 46. As a result, passenger volumes will be reduced significantly while safe-at-home orders remain in place in states, counties and cities across the USA.

While airlines operating at Ontario intend to reduce the number of flights to and from the airport, they plan to maintain service to all non-stop destinations with the exceptions of Houston Intercontinental (United Airlines) and Taiwan (China Airlines).
