Miami International Airport has shared details of a new Airport Operations Center (AOC) and Digital Monitoring Hub, which it says will be the first of its kind in the USA.

Scheduled for completion in 2027, the US$33m, 1,230m2 operations and emergency response facility will be equipped with AI-powered long-range pan-tilt-zoom cameras, real-time digital tower technology and an HD-quality integrated panoramic video wall, providing 360° visibility of the airport’s airside, landside and terminal areas for security and safety awareness.

SOF Connect, the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, has secured €450m (US$523m) in financing from international capital markets to fund the construction of a new terminal and modernization of existing infrastructure.

The financing carries a 22-year tenor and is structured through a combination of bank financing and a bond issuance – said to be the first project finance bond from a Bulgarian public-private partnership to be listed on a regulated market, Euronext Dublin.

Smiths Detection is expanding its footprint in Japan with new partnerships with Japan Airlines, Hiroshima International Airport and Miyazaki International Airport.

Hiroshima and Miyazaki airports will install Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX Model S scanners and iLane A20 automatic tray return systems. The agreement with Japan Airlines brings both systems to three additional hubs: Haneda Airport, Ishigaki Airport and Okadama Airport.

For the Japan Airlines contract, Smiths Detection will provide four Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX Model S scanners and four iLane A20 systems for the airline’s Global Club premium checkpoints in Terminal 1 at Haneda Airport.

Alaska Airlines has unveiled a modernized North Main Terminal at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), designed to improve passenger flow and prepare the airport for increased international traffic, including visitors arriving for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The project, known as the SEA Gateway Project, was delivered by HOK in collaboration with design-build partner Hensel Phelps. Originally built more than 40 years ago, the terminal has been reconfigured to streamline the passenger journey from curbside to security.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced plans to expand solar energy infrastructure at Newark Liberty International Airport, adding around 5MW of generating capacity across five sites.

The project is expected to produce nearly 5,900,000kWh of electricity in its first year – enough to power more than 550 homes – and forms part of the agency’s wider push toward net zero emissions.

The development will be delivered in partnership with SunLight General Capital under a power purchase agreement.

A fully interactive AI hologram designed for guest service and wayfinding has launched in LaGuardia Terminal B.

LaGuardia Gateway Partners (LGP), the manager and developer of Terminal B, said that although other airports have used holograms for entertainment or static welcome messages, its interactive Guest Experience Ambassador Hologram is the first of its kind in the industry.

Powered by Proto, a hologram hardware platform, and Holomedia’s AI Concierge Wayfinder application, Bridget offers a human-centered approach to digital assistance.

Singapore Airlines is to expand its services at Munich Airport, increasing the number of weekly flights from seven to 10 when the winter flight schedule begins at the end of October 2026.

In addition to the existing daily flights departing around noon, Singapore Airlines will offer evening flights from Munich on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. These will depart at 8:30pm and arrive in Singapore the following day at 3:15pm.

Munich Airport said passengers will also benefit from optimized layover times and improved connections from Singapore to other destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Duty Free Americas has announced the opening of its new LEGO specialty store at John F Kennedy International Airport Terminal 8.

The opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by leaders from DFA, LEGO and JFK. It follows successful LEGO stores opened at Dallas Fort Worth and Miami International Airports.

The National Arts Council (NAC) and Changi Airport Group (CAG) have signed a three-year partnership to introduce arts and cultural programming across Singapore Changi Airport, which handles about 70 million passengers annually.

Announced on April 27, the collaboration will see curated art displays, live performances and other activations staged throughout the airport’s terminals, aimed at both local and international travelers.

The launch event took place at Changi Airport Terminal 4 and was attended by Low Yen Ling, senior minister of state for the ministry of culture, community and youth and the ministry of trade and industry.
