Edinburgh and Budapest airports, both of which joined the Vinci Airports network in 2024, have introduced services that allow passengers to check in luggage before reaching the terminal.

Through a service operated by Airportr at Edinburgh Airport, Lufthansa and easyJet passengers can now have their bags collected from home, an office or a hotel and checked in before their flight, allowing them to head straight to security on arrival. According to Vinci Airports, Edinburgh is the first airport in Scotland to offer the service, which can be booked through the Airportr website.

Adelaide Airport is set to upgrade its self-service check-in and bag drop with Amadeus’s travel technology.

Under the terms of the new agreement, the airport will install more than 50 Amadeus Seamless Bag Drop S7 Air and S7 Air Hybrid units. These increase passenger servicing flexibility by operating in full self-service or agent-staffed modes, and benefit from a side-loading design that makes it easier to load bags and maneuver large items such as wheelchairs, strollers and trollies.

The USA’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) has launched a dataset of 250 images of synthetic carry-on baggage to improve screening operations.

The new dataset provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and third-party AI developers with access to high-fidelity, physically accurate x-ray and CT synthetic images. This resource is designed to help developers build, test and validate automatic threat recognition algorithms against complex scenarios without the bottlenecks of physical data collection.

Poczta Polska has won a tender to provide passenger and baggage security screening at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport, one of Poland’s largest regional airports. The three-year contract took effect on August 1.

Under the agreement, Poczta Polska will continue operating the airport’s security screening checkpoints, a role it already held prior to the renewed tender. Around 70 employees are involved in the operation of the security checkpoints, with the number of screening operators on a single shift ranging from several to more than a dozen depending on seasonal passenger traffic.

Edinburgh Airport has partnered with travel technology company Airportr and easyJet to launch a door-to-flight baggage service, allowing passengers to have checked luggage collected from home or a hotel and delivered directly to their flight.

The service, available ahead of the summer holiday season, lets easyJet customers traveling from Edinburgh check in luggage from home and skip bag drop at the airport. Passengers traveling to Geneva can also have bags delivered from the airport to their final destination on arrival.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) have launched a new project to develop a loading algorithm that will serve as the brain of baggage loading operations.

“Since each piece of baggage differs in shape, weight and material, there has been a lack of algorithmic technology to calculate and appropriately instruct on loading methods and sequences that prevent luggage from shifting,” NEDO said.

Mishandled baggage rates fell by 23% in 2025, with total volumes falling 19% to 24 million bags, according to SITA’s 2026 Baggage IT Insights report.

However, despite handling rates falling below pre-pandemic levels for the first time as passenger numbers rise, the total cost to the industry was approximatlely US$6.3bn – equal to 15% of total airline industry profit.

With each bag carrying an average cost of US$260 and net profit averaging just US$8 per passenger, one mishandled bag wipes out the profit for more than 30 seats sold, and five erases the profit of an entire flight.

From June 23, baggage checked at Incheon International Airport will be automatically transferred to the final destination for passengers traveling to Los Angeles and Seattle-Tacoma international airports, cutting transfer times by 20 minutes.

The service is launching with Korean Air and Delta Air Lines. The Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) expects participation to expand gradually.

Building on cooperation with the USA’s Department of Homeland Security established last year, MOLIT commenced its International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS) system to Los Angeles and Seattle airports on June 23.

Denver International Airport (DEN) and Southwest Airlines have launched a new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck Touchless ID Bag Drop option.

To use the bag drop, Southwest passengers aged 18 or over flying out of DEN must be current TSA PreCheck travelers, have valid passport information uploaded to their Southwest profile and have opted in to the program and provided all relevant information in the Southwest app.

To enter the dedicated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Bag Drop area, the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID indicator must appear on a passenger’s mobile boarding pass.

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport has selected Alstef Group to supply a new centralized baggage handling system as part of a wider infrastructure transformation program.

The system will be installed in a new Central Building located between Halls A and B, which will  support the airport’s long-term development and improve operational efficiency. The project forms part of the airport’s strategy to modernize infrastructure and accommodate future traffic growth while meeting evolving regulatory requirements.

Bordeaux Airport handled 5.9 million passengers in 2025, serving 92 destinations across 30 countries with 26 airlines.
