Jamie Oliver opens restaurant at Gatwick Airport

Jamie Oliver has opened a new restaurant area at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal that includes the chef’s signature Italian restaurant, his first Italian Bakery store and the UK’s first stand-alone Union Jacks Bar.

Occupying 6,000ft2, the restaurant area includes a kitchen that is 40% bigger than other Jamie’s Italian restaurants and the largest within the airport. The new restaurant forms part of Gatwick’s £1.2 billion investment programme to transform the airport and provide modern facilities.

Jamie’s Italian will offer passengers a range of traditional Italian food and features glass-fronted food preparation areas that showcase an antipasti bar and fresh pasta making area, plus a wood-fired pizza oven for fresh pizzas.

Oliver’s first ever Italian Bakery store will include a wide choice of freshly baked items from homemade pizzas, focaccias and filled sandwiches to cookies and brownies as well as freshly prepared salads, fruit and yoghurts. Bread will be baked onsite throughout the night and in the morning homemade jams will be served with toast.

The Union Jacks Bar is situated on the balcony of the North Terminal and will serve a full British menu, with small plates such as scotch eggs and dishes accompanied by homemade pickles. The bar also has an open beer cellar, offering an all-British wine list and a large number of UK sourced/produced beers.

Spencer Sheen, head of retail at Gatwick Airport, commented, “We’re thrilled Jamie Oliver chose to open his first ever restaurant in an airport at Gatwick. Passengers have called for a greater variety of dining options in the departure lounges, and our partnership with Jamie Oliver sees Gatwick taking yet another step in significantly enhancing the passenger journey to, through and from the airport. This exclusive offering should offer something for everyone and we’re excited to be able to open the doors to passengers today.’’

Jamie Oliver said, “Opening this restaurant in the airport is a new and exciting step to take. Whether you want to dine in the Italian, grab food for the flight from the bakery, or savour some good old Blighty grub before you jet off, this is something really special, just for Gatwick.”

The restaurants will be open to passengers boarding the first flight of the day, and will stay open until after the last flight departs.
