Indianapolis International has fastest wi-fi of any airport in the USA

Indianapolis International Airport, Indiana, claims that its recent terminal upgrades have created a wi-fi network that is faster than any airport in the USA.

Boasting an average speed of 40 Mbps, the airport’s new wi-fi network allows passengers to comfortably stream movies, music videos and television shows at wireless speeds that are up to 10 times faster than some of the largest US airports.

Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA), the airport operator, said, “We are dedicated to keeping up with the demands of our customers and responding to their needs. Travelers, especially our next generation of millennial travelers, expect a fast, reliable wi-fi experience. At Indianapolis International Airport, we made a commitment to deliver that better than anyone else.”

Improvements to the terminal’s wireless infrastructure include nearly doubling the number of access points from 99 to 197 and upgrading from wireless N technology to wireless AC technology. The faster speeds generated by wireless AC, combined with the increased density of access points, provide a greater coverage area, virtually eliminating ‘dead spots’ in the terminal. The airport’s wi-fi is free to use and also requires no user log-in.

Reid Goldsmith, senior director of information technology for IAA, said, “We’re pretty unique among airports. We have implemented a wi-fi system where you don’t have to sit through an ad or pay for internet access. You connect and go, just like at home. As demand for speed increases, we can quickly react and increase our capabilities to meet that demand.”
