Building contractors Lemmikäinen Corporation and Destia Group have begun infrastructure work for the terminal expansion project at Helsinki Airport in Finland. Airport operator Finavia announced the selection of the contractors in August 2015, and work is already underway on creating temporary aircraft stands and public utility services.
The construction of the terminal is scheduled to take place in early 2016 following the successful installation of the site’s infrastructure. The extension will increase the area of the terminal by approximately 807,000ft² and will also provide renovated aircraft parking and taxiing areas.
The project has been split into two large contracts between the infrastructure and building work, as well as two smaller contracts for the installation of a baggage handling system and boarding bridges.
Henri Hansson, technical director of Finavia, said, “These are both collaborative contracts. With the main contractors, we form a project organization to which Finavia and the contractors and designers bring their own competence. The smooth progress of the work requires a clear joint objective, good management, sufficient resources and open communication.
“We have thought through technical and production-related solutions and safety questions well in advance.”
The extension work will commence at the south wing of the non-Schengen area of the terminal, later moving to the west wing with a scheduled completion date for the summer of 2020.
