The Ministry of Transport and Aviation for the Bahamas has announced a series of improvement works to fully modernize the country’s aviation sector.
Construction work has begun on the redevelopment of Exuma International Airport in Moss Town, including a newly renovated and expanded terminal, fire station and runway. It is estimated that works will be complete by the end of the year.
Design plans are also underway for development of North Eleuthera Airport and the selection of a new airport sites for South Eleuthera and Long Island. Design plans are also being finalized for terminals and runway works for Moores Island, Great Harbour Cay and Mayaguana.
The ministry has also acquired a new radar system that will go live over the next few weeks and is constructing a training building with state-of-the-art simulators, which will help to reduce training times for air traffic controllers. The ministry recently recruited 10 new air traffic control trainees and is now looking to recruit an additional 10 trainees.
Finally the Government of the Bahamas recently entered into an agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for the preparation of North Eleuthera, Exuma and Treasure Cay airports for public private partnerships that will assist in capitalizing the infrastructural redevelopment of the airports.
