Sun Group and Changi Airports International (CAI) have signed a strategic agreement to support the development of Phu Quoc International Airport, with plans to position it as an aviation and tourism hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
Under the partnership, CAI will provide advisory services covering airport operations, commercial activities, air connectivity, and capacity and service improvements. The agreement also includes plans to develop the airport into what the partners describe as an “airport destination,” integrating aviation infrastructure with tourism, retail and entertainment.
The development comes ahead of the APEC 2027 summit, when Phu Quoc is expected to receive increased international traffic.
Phu Quoc International Airport handled around six million passengers in 2025 and has seen strong growth in recent years, particularly in international traffic. A government-approved masterplan includes the construction of a new runway and Terminal 2, with capacity projected to reach 24 million passengers annually, scalable to 50 million in the longer term.
CAI will work with Sun Group to support the airport’s development in line with international standards. The collaboration follows discussions between the two organizations in Vietnam and Singapore focused on combining expertise in airport management and destination development.
Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group, said airports are playing an increasing role in shaping the overall travel experience. “Through this partnership with Changi Airports International, we aim to develop Phu Quoc International Airport into a true airport destination where the travel experience begins the moment visitors arrive,” he reported.
Eugene Gan, CEO of CAI, said the company sees potential in the airport’s role as a gateway to the island. “We look forward to contributing our expertise to enable Sun Group to create a world-class airport experience,” he stated.
The partners said the project is intended to support Phu Quoc’s development as a regional gateway, combining airport infrastructure with broader tourism and economic growth initiatives.
