Sun Group has begun construction on the civil aviation component of Phan Thiet Airport in Vietnam, a project valued at more than VND3.9 trillion (US$148m).
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on April 27, 2026, was organized by the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee and Sun Group Corporation. The development will improve air connectivity to the Mui Ne-Phan Thiet area and the South Central Coast.
The airport, located in Mui Ne ward and covering nearly 75 hectares, is being developed to 4E standards, allowing it to handle wide-body aircraft, with an initial capacity of around 2 million passengers per year. The project moved from investment approval to construction in approximately five months and is scheduled for completion within two years.
Tran Hong Minh, Vietnam’s minister of construction, said the project highlights the role of private sector involvement in infrastructure development. He pointed to Sun Group’s previous work on Van Don International Airport and its involvement in Phu Quoc International Airport as examples of private companies delivering major aviation projects.
The airport will feature an 18,000m² passenger terminal inspired by Champa cultural architecture. Design elements reference the Poshanu towers, with a structure intended to reflect traditional forms through modern construction.
Infrastructure at the site will include an apron with six aircraft stands capable of handling both Code E and Code C aircraft, as well as a 45m air traffic control tower equipped with weather observation and navigation systems. The airport is designed to support domestic operations, with capacity to handle occasional international flights.
Ho Van Muoi, chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee, said the airport is expected to reduce travel times between Phan Thiet and major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, as well as other tourist destinations.
Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group, said: “Phan Thiet Airport is not just an infrastructure project, but also the starting piece for the large-scale tourism – resort – aviation ecosystem that Sun Group aims to invest in Lam Dong in the coming time.”
He added that the project is expected to support regional economic development, including tourism, logistics and services, and create employment opportunities.
Once operational, the airport will make Lam Dong one of the few localities in Vietnam with two airports and is expected to play a role in strengthening connectivity across the South Central aviation network.
