Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM) has been awarded more than US$8.5m in federal funding to rehabilitate its primary runway.
The funding, awarded through the US Department of Transportation, will support improvements to more than 2,700m of existing runway pavement. The rehabilitation project is designed to enhance the runway’s structural integrity, reduce the potential for pavement-related debris and extend its useful life.
The airport said the investment will help maintain a safe and reliable operating environment for commercial airlines, military partners and general aviation users while preparing MGM to support future growth.
Congressman Shomari C Figures, a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, announced the funding after submitting a formal letter of support for the project earlier this year. In a release from his office, he said, “I’m thrilled to see our community receive significant federal support and investment with over US$8.5m in federal funding. The Montgomery Regional Airport is essential to our local, state and regional economy, and this funding will help to make necessary infrastructure updates to improve conditions at the airport and ensure its long-term viability.”
MGM said the runway rehabilitation reflects the airport’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that supports safe air travel, economic development and connections for the River Region. The airport serves residents, businesses, visitors and military partners throughout central Alabama.
Planning and coordination for the project will continue in partnership with federal, state and local agencies. Additional information on the project timeline and any anticipated operational impacts will be shared as details are finalized.
