Finnish meteorological technology company Vaisala says it expects to include a €25m (US$29m) award for airport weather systems in Indonesia in its orders received for the third quarter of 2026, now that the customer has secured the necessary financing.

The project, agreed in 2024 with the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), covers a comprehensive upgrade of weather systems and equipment across 14 Indonesian airports. With financing now secured, it moves into implementation this autumn and is expected to run for three years. The company described it as its largest aviation weather project to date.

Anne Jalkala, executive vice president for weather, energy and environment at Vaisala, said, “Securing funding for this project enables it to strengthen aviation safety and turn weather preparedness into concrete improvements. Indonesia invests in airport weather infrastructure that protects passengers and ground personnel in demanding tropical and volcanic conditions and builds capacity for a growing aviation market for decades to come.”

According to the International Air Transport Association, Asia-Pacific held 34.5% of the world’s air passenger market share in 2025. Indonesia, the largest aviation market in Southeast Asia, recorded more than 59 million domestic and 20 million international passengers that year, according to the Indonesian Bureau of Statistics.

The project includes an AviMet automated weather observing system for eight airports, and a wind-shear alert system combining Vaisala X-band weather radars and wind lidars for four airports. It also includes a specialized system using the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s SILAM dispersion model to help authorities estimate the movement of volcanic ash clouds – a key consideration in a country situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, with an estimated 80 active volcanoes.

The project is funded through the Finnish Public Sector Investment Facility, an instrument governed by Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs for projects supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals in developing countries. Vaisala, BMKG and Finnish partners will now focus on detailed design, deployment and capacity building.
