Hamburg Airport in Germany has officially inaugurated its new self-service bag-drop kiosks for use by Air France, KLM and EasyJet passengers in Terminal 1 (T1).
Developed and manufactured by Materna, the 10 new kiosks have been designed to fit in with the aesthetics of T1 and contain new features such as baggage classification, meaning that passengers are alerted to oversized luggage or other items that are not permitted to enter the system. This can include folded strollers and prams, as well as backpacks with dangling shoulder straps that can jam the system. Checked items are also automatically photographed, making it easier for the passenger to prove that the baggage was in good condition when it was deposited.
Johannes Scharnberg, director of aviation at Hamburg Airport, said, “Already, after just a short period of operation, we can see that our passengers are not having any problems with the new equipment. Many of our passengers have already discovered the benefits of the kiosks for themselves and have given us very positive feedback.
“We have hardly encountered any technical anxiety on the part of our passengers as the system is straightforward and self-explanatory. Staff are on hand to provide personal support with the process at any time, so nobody needs to worry about being stuck at a machine with no human help.”
Dr Georg Oschmann, executive vice president mobility at Materna, added, “With our Danish partner, Marcus Pedersen, we found an attractive solution for Hamburg Airport. With numerous self-service projects at more than 70 airports worldwide, we have a great deal of experience in the implementation of self-service solutions for passenger handling.”
The self-bag-drop system is based on international common use self-service standards, enabling airlines to deploy their own applications without having to reprogram the machines each time.
