The joint venture of Ballast Nedam and TAV Construction has been awarded the building contract for the new pier at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The project includes the construction of the pier, gatehouses and the surrounding aircraft stands.
With an area of 55,000m2 (590,000ft2), the new pier will feature five gates for narrow-body aircraft on the north side and three gates for wide-body aircraft on the south side. The gates on the south side can also be used to accommodate six narrow-body aircraft. Two wide-body gates will be added to the south side at a later stage. The commissioning of the pier is planned for the end of 2019.
“We are very satisfied with the combination of Dutch firm Ballast Nedam and the Turkish company TAV Construction, which specializes in aviation,” said Birgit Otto, chief operations officer of Royal Schiphol Group, the airport operator. “With the joint knowledge of these companies, we are able to provide airlines and passengers additional capacity and modern facilities at Schiphol in the most efficient way. The project must be realized without compromising the safety or capacity at our airport. The joint venture has everything it takes to make this challenging project a success.”
The new pier will have the characteristics of a terminal, with security filters, border control, shops and catering. In addition, three floors will separate Schengen and non-Schengen travelers, enabling it to be used for a wide range of destinations and airlines.
The pier will also be the most sustainable at Schiphol thanks to design elements such as biomaterial, insulating glass and reusable plastic and marble rubblework tiles. Its roof will also be fitted with 5,000m2 (54,000ft2) of solar panels and rainwater will be collected to flush the toilets.
