Miami International launches new film and video art series

Helen NormanBy Helen NormanNovember 5, 20192 Mins Read

Miami International Airport Moving Images (MIAmi), a quarterly screening series featuring contemporary art and image-making by South Florida-based video artists, is now screening a series of short experimental films and video art produced by artists Carola Bravo, Claudio Marcotulli and Dinorah de Jesús Rodríguez. Located near gate J7, this series addresses themes of migration, travel, and journeys both physical and surreal.

“The MIAmi film and video series adds a new dimension to the extensive fine arts and cultural affairs program we already provide at MIA,” said Lester Sola, MIA director and CEO. “With a focus on the diverse cultures within the South Florida community, we think this new series will be especially appealing to the millions of passengers we serve from around the world.”

Carola Bravo is a Venezuelan visual artist, architect, art promoter and educator based in Miami. She is known for her immersive video installations and urban interventions. Inspired by Jacob Lawrence’s seminal work ‘The Migration Series’ and her own personal history as a Venezuelan immigrant, Bravo’s ‘Migration Dreams’ series addresses the search for a better life in ever-changing lands.

The work of Claudio Marcotulli, also born in Venezuela, is defined by its nonlinear and surreal universes where unique characters exchange feelings, characters and experiences, often entwining multiple perspectives into one. Marcotulli’s ‘Remo Memories’ is an avant-doc short film about a journey through childhood, memory and water, where characters’ natural and polluted habitats cross paths.

Dinorah de Jesús Rodríguez, born in Cuba, is an experimental visual artist and filmmaker working with expanded cinema, public intervention, installation and media design for the theater. The artist’s ‘casas viajantes’ juxtaposes handmade celluloid film with digital video and includes footage of her family’s immigration journey.
