Beumer Latinoamericana Equipamentos, a Beumer Group subsidiary and supplier of automated baggage handling systems (BHS), has completed the refurbishment of the BHS in Terminal 2 (T2) at Tom Jobim International Airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The upgrade involved creating a custom layout designed to enable the airport to meet peak demands throughout the Olympics, as well as for future growth forecasts. To achieve the new layout, Beumer refurbished the existing BHS and re-integrated part of the existing system with state-of-the-art equipment to enable higher capacity and efficiency.

In order to be fully operational in time for the 2016 Olympics, Beumer had to work to a tight timescale of less than seven months. The scheduling of the project also ensured that there would be no disruption to airport operations throughout the integration process.

For departures, the airport now has seven baggage lines and make-up carousels, which include the addition of two new lines and carousels. The 10 existing arrival baggage reclaim carousels have been relocated and also have two new carousels and a new recheck-in line and transfer carousel.

Beumer was also responsible for the complete integration of new SCADA automation and supervisory software. This will help to ensure uninterrupted operation and reliability across the entire BHS in the airport’s new T2 facility and South Pier.
