London Gatwick Airport has won the ‘Process Innovation of the Year’ award for its North Terminal development project at this year’s London Construction Awards.
The airport is currently undertaking a £2.7bn (US$3.5bn) capital investment program with the aim of improving the passenger experience at every touchpoint. A key part of this transformation has been the redevelopment of the North Terminal, which involved reconfiguring all landside areas including arrivals, check-in and security. The project also included the installation of the world’s largest self-service bag-drop zone, as well as e-gates for arrivals and a 10-lane security area.
Raymond Melee, construction director, Gatwick Airport, said, “I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved with this project, and the award recognizes the tremendous commitment from everyone involved who worked tirelessly to deliver a truly fantastic facility for our passengers.
“Investing in the transformation of the airport is a critical part of our growth strategy as it enables speed and efficiency for the 45 million passengers who choose to fly from Gatwick.”
