Airport operator ANA Aeroportos has completed an €11m (US$12m) modernization project for Madeira Airport on the island of Madeira in Portugal, including a series of facility upgrades and a new 19,000ft2 commercial area.

The project has expanded the airport’s handling capacity from 720 passengers per hour to more than 1,400 passengers per hour, and has added seven new security screening lines that will increase processing times by up to 80%.

In the new commercial area, the old store has made way for an 8,600ft2 walkthrough duty free store and a new Portfolio store has been added selling local gifts and merchandise.

The food court on level three of the airport has been remodeled and features four new dining concepts including Specially, Cockpit, Pizza Hut and Buondi. An outdoor terrace also provides travelers with stunning views of the sea and runway. A wide range of retail stores has been added to the area and divided among three distinct shopping districts – Travel & Business Gate, Fashion Gate and Football Gate.
