Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) has announced the opening of the North Concourse at Taoyuan International Airport, marking a key milestone in the development of the airport’s new Terminal 3.
The concourse adds eight gates – D11 to D18 – extending from Gate D10 in Terminal 2 and is expected to accommodate an additional 5.8 million passengers annually.
The opening forms part of a broader expansion program that will increase the airport’s capacity to 45 million passengers per year. The project includes the construction of Terminal 3, which will expand the airport by around 150% while construction continues alongside ongoing operations.
According to RSHP, the North Concourse provides an early indication of the architectural approach planned for Terminal 3, with an emphasis on adaptable design and passenger circulation.
The new concourse features wider aisles, clear sightlines and varied volumes designed to improve passenger flow and orientation. A color palette of yellow, orange and burgundy has been used to help passengers identify gate areas, while large-scale public artworks highlighting Taiwanese culture are installed along the concourse.
Natural light enters the space through a silver façade fitted with approximately 750m of metal louvers, designed to control glare and reduce solar heat gain. The concourse includes a double-height gallery space with views over the airfield.
Structural elements are expressed externally and supported by back trusses, while the interior incorporates varying ceiling heights intended to create different spatial experiences. Design features include halo-shaped lighting fixtures and ‘lotus head’ totems that integrate air supply systems.
The North Concourse opening represents a major step in the development of Terminal 3, which is Taiwan’s largest public infrastructure project since the country’s Ten Major Construction Projects of the 1970s.
An official ceremony marking the opening took place on December 25, 2025, attended by Lai Ching-te, Cho Jung-tai, Chen Shih-kai and Chang San-cheng, along with Yang Wei-fuu, chairman of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Corporation.
Andrew Tyley, director at RSHP, said the project is designed to support the airport’s evolving role as an international hub.
“RSHP has succeeded in designing a terminal that responds holistically to the evolving needs of passengers, the airport and the emerging aerotropolis,” he stated. “It is a defining project that repositions Taoyuan as a global gateway.”
The next stage of the Terminal 3 project will include completion of a large ‘hard-shell’ roof structure featuring an undulating ceiling inspired by Taiwan’s mountain landscapes.
