Munich Airport has begun operations at its new Terminal 1 pier, marking the completion of a construction project that has been underway for more than seven years.
The pier officially opened on April 21, handling over 11,000 passengers and more than 70 flights on its first day of operations. The facility is integrated into the airport’s existing Terminal 1 operations.
Thomas Hoff Andersson, managing director and chief operating officer at Munich Airport, welcomed passengers at the opening.
The first arrival at the new pier was an American Airlines flight from Charlotte, which was marked with a water salute. Delta Air Lines operated the first departure from the pier, with a flight to Detroit.
A Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 also arrived during the opening, featuring a retro livery to mark the airline’s 80th anniversary.
The new pier has been developed alongside ongoing airport operations and underwent a six-month trial phase before opening. The facility is designed to improve passenger flow and operational efficiency within Terminal 1.
Munich Airport said the project is part of its broader development strategy, aimed at modernizing infrastructure and enhancing the passenger experience.
