NEC Corporation’s Smart Airport product has won the Service Design category in the 2020 iF Design Awards. According to NEC, Smart Airport is a comprehensive design for “safe and comfortable airport services” centered on customs e-gates employing NEC’s facial recognition technology.

The system consists of a customs declaration app for smartphones, a customs declaration terminal, walk-through gates with facial authentication, and guidance boards. Non-stop authentication is possible. Smooth identification contributes to reducing congestion in customs inspection areas and shortening travelers’ waiting time, according to NEC.

The annual iF Design Awards are run by Hannover-based iF International Forum Design, one of the world’s oldest independent design organizations.
