Phu Quoc International Airport is set to become a fully self-service aviation hub ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2027 Forum, following a partnership between Sun Group and SITA.
Under the agreement, SITA will deploy an end-to-end suite of passenger processing technologies across a new Terminal 2, enabling travelers to use automated touchpoints to check in, select seats, print boarding passes and bag tags, drop baggage and board flights.
The new terminal is projected to handle 24 million passengers annually when it opens in July 2027, with long-term capacity scalable to 50 million. Development of the project began in March 2026.
The terminal will include 204 common-use workstations supported by SITA Flex Hybrid, alongside a local departure control system (DCS) for operational resilience. Passenger processing will be supported by 150 self-service kiosks, 100 bag-drop units, and 38 dual-lane automated boarding gates, all coordinated through biometric technology.
Baggage operations will be managed using real-time tracking and reconciliation tools, while airport operations will be supported by an airport operational database (AODB) and passenger information systems across nearly 400 displays.
Nguyen Chi Thanh, president of Sun Group, said, “We are pleased to partner with SITA on this strategic collaboration to support the transformation of our airport portfolio. As we continue to invest in world-class aviation infrastructure, SITA’s proven expertise and end-to-end technology capabilities will play a key role in helping us deliver smarter, more efficient and seamless passenger experiences.”
The partnership also includes a memorandum of understanding to extend collaboration across Sun Group’s future airport developments in Vietnam. The operating model at Phu Quoc is expected to serve as a template for projects including Phan Thiet Airport and planned developments in Con Dao and Rach Gia.
Over the next five years, Sun Group aims to expand its airport portfolio to at least five locations, targeting 5-Star Skytrax standards.
Sumesh Patel, president for Asia-Pacific at SITA, said, “Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the region, and this partnership with Sun Group marks a key milestone in supporting that growth with future-ready infrastructure.”
Phu Quoc International Airport will be operated in partnership with Changi Airports International. The upgrade is part of a wider effort to integrate aviation with Sun Group’s tourism and hospitality developments on the island.
SITA and Sun Group have collaborated since 2019, when SITA first delivered airport technology at Van Don Airport.
