SkeyDrone has launched a drone threat assessment platform for airports. RunwaySafe has been developed in close collaboration with airport operations teams and air traffic control as well as the Belgian air navigation services provider, Skeyes.
As we will explore in the next issue of Passenger Terminal World, airports worldwide are facing an increase in drone sightings and, as SkeyDrone highlights, even unverified reports can trigger runway closures, flight delays and costly diversions. Limited situational awareness often makes it difficult to determine when it is safe to resume operations, extending disruption and impacting passenger confidence.
RunwaySafe addresses this challenge by assessing each drone sighting in real time and highlighting only those flights that pose a genuine and immediate risk to airspace safety or airport security.
“Unlike traditional detection systems that generate alerts for every drone entering controlled airspace, RunwaySafe applies aviation-grade operational logic aligned with real-world procedures,” SkeyDrone said. “The platform visualizes drone activity within a dynamic airport environment, automatically adapting to active runway configurations and operational modes.”
Key capabilities include 3D airport threat zones aligned with runways, approach paths and critical operational areas; dynamic runway configuration reflecting real-time airport operations; threat classification to reduce false alarms and unnecessary escalations; ATM and UTM integration for unified awareness across crewed and uncrewed traffic; multi-sensor integration combining RF, radar, camera and acoustic detection systems; and analytics and forensics supporting post-incident analysis and compliance reporting.
