Mactan-Cebu International Airport Terminal 2, developed by a consortium led by India’s GMR Group, was named winner of the Completed Buildings-Transport category in the recent World Architecture Festival.
GMR Group, with its local Filipino consortium partner Megawide, formed GMR – Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) to develop the terminal, which was inaugurated by Rodrigo Duterte, president of the Philippines, on June 7, 2018.
The World Architecture Festival judges described the 65,000m2 (699,650ft2 ) terminal, which was designed by Hong Kong-based Integrated Design Associates along with local designers Budji Layug, Royal Pineda and Kenneth Cobonpue, as “simple and elegant”, noting its use of locally sourced materials and its integration into the landscape.
The new terminal’s most recognizable element is its wooden roof. An array of glulam (glue-laminated) arches form the roof’s curvature and define its geometry and modularity. The arches span 30m (100ft), enabling the terminal to be as column-free as possible. The white alpine wood has a service life of about 200 years.
The terminal offers a 3,000m2 (32,290ft2 ) retail and leisure space and a walk-through duty free with a dedicated floor area of 895m2 (9,630ft2 ).
