Ohio’s John Glenn Columbus International Airport is now sourcing 100% of its energy supply from renewable sources.
The development is the result of a collaboration with Worthington Energy Consultants and the energy is provided by community partner AEP Energy.
“The nearly 24,000 passengers who travel daily through John Glenn International can feel good about the green energy powering their airport experience,” said Joe Nardone, president and CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority.
“With a new rental car facility opening in 2021, and with other airport developments in support of the growing Columbus Region, we appreciate our energy partners helping us move to 100% renewable energy.”
The Columbus Regional Airport Authority expects to save almost US$13m in energy costs at John Glenn International and Bolton Field Airport.
“This agreement is a sound energy choice for the Columbus Regional Airport Authority because it reduces energy costs and significantly lessens John Glenn International and Bolton Field’s environmental impact,” said Craig Grant, CEO of Worthington Energy Consultants. “We are pleased to be their collaborative energy advisor and happy to have facilitated their transition to 100% renewable energy.”
John Glenn International’s other environmental initiatives include becoming the first airport to install runway LED high-intensity edge lighting, converting shuttle buses to propane autogas, upgrading airport gates with emission-reducing aircraft servicing equipment, and offsetting power required for free wi-fi and more than 2,000 power outlets through the utilization of roof-top solar panels.
